Why credit card reward schemes aren’t worth their weight in gold
STOCKPILING reward points for flights and shopping freebies is a waste of time and money for the average credit card customer, researchers say.

Most programs are practically worthless if you spend a standard $14,000 a year, a study by financial comparison website Mozo has found.

Some schemes leave consumers out of pocket because the annual fee costs more than what you get back in return.

On the flip side, big spenders who carefully choose whether they want flights, cash or shopping vouchers and pay off bills before being slugged the stellar interest rates on rewards cards are reaping benefits.

More than 10 million credit and charge cards of Australians are linked to rewards.

The loyalty cards account for more than half the market, PP-R pipeand typically attract the highest interest rates and an annual fee.
The latest report follows a separate survey by consumer group Choice that warned cardholders spending $1000 a month were taking on average more than five years to earn enough points for a $500 digital camera, and needed to splurge $6600 on an average card to earn enough points for a $50 toaster.

Mozo.com.au managing director Rohan Gamble said some cardholders were being sucked in.

“We knew there were going to be some rotten deals out there, but we were shocked to discover that for the average cardholder rewards cards on the whole just aren’t worth chasing,” Mr Gamble said.

“Our advice is to look at their annual spend level PP fittingsand shop around for a card that will deliver real value,PP-R fittings not the illusion of value.”

Cruising the Kimberley Coast
AS the soft light of the dawn sun slowly peaked out from behind the rocky Kimberley Coast in northwest Australia, it was luxurious to welcome the day from our stateroom balcony.

Wife Pat and I were on the Sun Princess, cruising from Sydney to Perth around the top of Australia.

As the gentle rays transformed to a blinding light before settling into a pleasant aura, the amazing changes of the terrain left us in wonderment at the area’s beauty.

After the ship’s photographers returned from their picture excursion, the giant ship slowly cruised past the changing scenery for the next few hours. The rugged coastline put on a constantly changing face, with portions of pristine white sandy beaches contrasting with brightly coloured boulders. The cameras were kept clicking.

We saw no wildlife, but were assured crocodiles were lying in wait for the unwary.

At Broome, the next stop, sunset was also stunning.

And when they were gone, the camels left no trace of their presence, as an attendant walked behind to pick up the “doings”. Earlier, we were surprised to see a completely naked couple emerge from the gentle surf. There’s no telling what you may see on the Kimberly coast.

As we sipped our wine, tiny bubble crabs created the most amazing sculptures on the sand. It’s a daily chore for the fingernail-sized crab, to extract nutrition from algae and microbes from the surface of each grain. Thousands of spherical balls are created, then washed away by the tide.

EMI sues website over Beatles tunes
EMI filed a suit yesterday in a US district court in Los Angeles, accusing Bluebeat.com of copyright infringement and demanding that Beatles music be removed from the website’s playlists.

EMI owns the rights to Beatles recordings and collaborates with Apple Corps on distribution of the music.

EMI said that Bluebeat, which offers MP3 downloads of songs for US25c each, is not authorised sell Beatles tunes.

A visit to the Bluebeat website today revealed a host of Beatles albums or individual songs that could be streamed for free listening or purchased as digital downloads.

Bluebeat did not return a request for comment.

Apple Corps was the Beatles recording label and is controlled by surviving members of the legendary 1960s era band and spouses of the late John Lennon and George Harrison.
pple Corps has been notoriously leery of making Beatles music available for digital download, eschewing even allowing songs to be delivered to iPod or iPhone devices through the globally popular iTunes online store.

Beatles music made a tentative step in September toward a digital future with the release of The Beatles: Rock Band videogame devoted to the group’s music and performances.

Another step was taken today with the announcement that EMI and Apple Corps will make a re-mastered catalogue of Beatles music available digitally on limited edition USB drives in early December.
